In the 1871 census as James Croucher, aged 6, born in Ripley, Hampshire and living with his father (John), aunt (Anne) and brother (Fred) - I believe Anne was his mother and his father unknown because John never married - at Bagnum Cottage, Ringwood.

His mother married Charles Rogers in 1876.

In the 1881 census as James Croucher, aged 16, born in Christchurch, employed as an agricultural labourer and living with his mother (Ann Rogers), his step-father (Charles), brother (Frederick) and halfsister (Lucy) at Sanford Park Hill, Ringwood, Hampshire.

The marriage of James Croucher and Emily Watton is in FreeBMD in January-March 1891 in Ringwood (2b 989).

In the 1891 census as James Croucher aged 23 born in Hamburg (sic - in the index, Hants on the original), Ringwood, employed as a railway labourer, and living with his wife in Christchurch Road, Ringwood.

In the 1901 census as James Croucher, aged 36, born in Christchurch, employed as a forest woodman and living with his wife in Sandford, Ringwood.

Ripley is just north of Sopley, and three miles north of Christchurch. Christchurch was in Hampshire until 1974.
