In British History it states John Croucher was the Dean of the Hospital of St Mary, Chichester (situated near St Mary in the Market) from after 1412 to 1447 when he resigned. In 1442 a visitation reported that there were only two brethren and two sisters. Other dates for John Croucher are 1438-1446 and from 1426.

In the National Archives there is a letter to Edward IV dated 12 November 1473 from John Waynflete, Dean of Chichester, stating that certain lay people are occupying the church of Stoughton with force and arms, and asking him to remove this lay force. This letter mentions John Croucher (Crucher), formerly Dean of Chichester.
