SN4086 Peasant Land Market in Southern England, 1260-1350:
Bishops Waltham, Hampshire: In 1306 Amy atte Cruch' payed 13/4 for a ferling previous held by William atte Cruche (no relationship given).
Bishops Waltham, Hampshire: In 1307 Richard Godeknight (Goodknight) paid 3/4 for a tenement and ferling in Aschtone (Aston) surrended by Amy atte Cruche.
Bishops Waltham, Hampshire: In 1309 Robert atte Cruch', son of Richard Goudeknycgt (Goodknight) paid 4/- for a messuage and ferling previously held by Robert atte Crouch', who had left the neighbourhood and no longer wished to hold it. There appears to be no relationship between the two Roberts. Is this Richard Goodknight the same person? Was one of the Roberts the husband of Amy? Or is this just a good example of where the surname goes with the land rather than the person?
The same Richard Goudeknight paid 12d for the marriage of his daughter Juliana in Bishops Waltham in 1312.
A Ferling is a quarter of a parcel of land and a tenement is a family dwelling house held by tenure.
Messuage - a dwelling house and legal rights such as access to commons etc.
