1348 Bishops Waltham, Hampshire: John atte Halle (Hall) paid 6/8d for the surrender of one acre purpresture previously held by Thomas atte Cruch, and 12d for the heriot of Thomas.
Heriot - the fine paid to the bishop when a tenant died, originally the tenant's best beast or chattel, but later paid in money.
Purpresture - secondary quality land not subject to the obligations placed on bondland, and which therefore could be exchanged more freely.
